Week 9 - The Messy Magpie

Lesson 2 - Speech Bubbles

* Today you are going to complete some speech bubbles to show what the animals might have said at different points in the story.

* This means you will need to use the first person pronoun 'I' (rather than 'he' or 'she').

* Practise saying the best 'I' sentence you can think of....

* Remember, 'I' is always capital (see the poster below).

* You can either print out the correct sheet below, or write straight into your workbook, looking at the pictures for your group.

Reception Class (not Monkeys): Tell a grown up what you think the characters might be saying and they will write it for you - you might like to have a go at writing some key words (e.g. 'sad', 'mess'), or one simple sentence.

Monkeys, Aliens & Monsters: Write a simple sentence for each speech bubble, using Phase 3 phonics.

Year 1 (not Aliens & Monsters): Write a sentence for each speech bubble, using 'and' + 'because', Phase 5 phonics and exciting vocab.

* Remember to use your sound mat to help you with spelling, and the word mat below, and remember to use 'I' not 'he'.

Lesson 3 - Litter

* Watch the video (link below) - 'What Should I Do With My Litter?'

* Today we will be thinking about why litter is a bad thing. Read the Litter PPT (below).

* You are going to write a letter as Morris the Magpie to the humans who dropped litter, telling them about the harmful effects their actions can have (not yet about what they should do instead).

* Think about how it makes the environment look and smell, the dangers for animals, and the properties of plastic.

* You can either print out the correct sheet below, or write straight into your workbook.

Reception Class (not Monkeys): Draw a picture in your workbook of litter and what it can do. Write a simple sentence, using Phase 2 Phonics.

Monkeys, Aliens & Monsters: Write a simple letter as Morris ('Dear / To humans', 2+ sentences using Phase 3 Phonics, 'From Morris').

Year 1 (not Aliens & Monsters): Write a more detailed letter as Morris, 3+ sentences using 'and' + 'because'Phase 5 phonics and persuasive vocabulary.

* Remember to use your sound mat to help you with spelling.

Lesson 4 - Recycling

* Watch the video again (link above) - 'What Should I Do With My Litter?'

* Today we will be thinking about what we can do with our litter. Read the Recycling PPT (below).

* You are going to design a poster to tell people what they can do with their litter, in order to protect the environment.

* Think about how recycling works, and what can be recycled. Think about how we can reduce litter by reusing items.

* Either in your workbook or on a blank piece of paper, create a poster that combines images and words / sentences.

* There are some cut-out images below you may wish to use, and a word mat to help with spelling.

Reception Class (not Monkeys): Add some key words to your poster, using Phase 2 Phonics (e.g. 'bin', 'can').

Monkeys, Aliens & Monsters: Add some captions to your poster, using Phase 3 Phonics (e.g. 'Put cans in a bin for metal.').

Year 1 (not Aliens & Monsters): Add some more detailed captions to your poster, using Phase 5 phonics (e.g. 'Always put cans into a metal bin for the dustbin truck to collect.').

* Remember to use your sound mat to help you with spelling.
