'Dinosaurs in my School'

Lesson 2 - Why Should Spike Visit St. Thomas?

* Spike the Dinosaur wants to visit us at St. Thomas, but he doesn't know anything about our school!

* Talk to an adult / older child about what you would show Spike if he came to visit us, and what you could do together.

* In you workbook...

 

Reception Class (not Monkeys) - Draw a picture of something you would do with Spike and try to write a caption or short sentence to label it. Remember to use Phase 2 Phonics. E.g. 'play outside'

 

Monkeys, Monsters & AliensDraw a picture of something you would do with Spike and write a full sentence, using Phase 3 & 4 Phonics. Try to use 'and' if you can. E.g. 'I will play outside with him and show him the sandpit.'

 

Year 1s (not Monsters / Aliens) - Draw 3 things you would do with Spike and write 3 full, detailed sentences with time words and Phase 5 Phonics. Try to use 'and' and 'because'. E.g. 'First I will play outside with him and show him the enormous sandpit because that is the best part. Then...'

 

Lesson 3 - Persuading Mr Lobb

* Oh dear, Mr Lobb isn't sure whether or or not to let Spike the Dinosaur visit St Thomas - We need to persuade him!

* Pretend an adult / older child is Mr Lobb and convince them to let Spike visit St Thomas. Think about everything Mr Lobb is worried about - he says that dinosaurs are big and fierce, that Spike might make a mess, break things and scare the Infants, and asks what he would eat at lunch time.

* In your workbook...

 

Reception Class (not Monkeys) - Draw a picture of Spike being a good dinosaur at St Thomas and try to write a caption or short sentence to persuade Mr Lobb to let Spike visit. Remember to use Phase 2 Phonics. E.g. 'he is kind'

 

Monkeys, Monsters & Aliens - Draw a picture of Spike being a good dinosaur at St Thomas and write a full sentence, using Phase 3 & 4 Phonics, to persuade Mr Lobb to let Spike visit. Try to use 'and' if you can. E.g. 'He is kind and will sit still on the carpet.'

 

Year 1s (not Monsters / Aliens) - Draw Spike being a good dinosaur at St Thomas and write 3+ full, detailed sentences using Phase 5 Phonics to persuade Mr Lobb to let Spike visit. Try to use 'and' and 'because'. E.g. 'Please let Spike visit us because he is kind to everyone and will always sit still and listen on the carpet.'

 

Lesson 4 - Welcoming the new Reception children to St Thomas

 

* In September, we will be welcoming 34 new Reception children to St Thomas.

* Talk to an adult / older child about how you felt on your first day at school - were you excited? Or nervous?

 

Reception Class (not Monkeys) - Make a card to welcome a new Reception child to St Thomas. Draw a picture of something you love at our school on the front. Inside, have a go at writing 'Welcome' or 'Welcome to school / St Thomas' and 'From ________.'

 

Monkeys, Monsters & Aliens- Make a card to welcome a new Reception child to St Thomas. Draw a picture of something you love at our school on the front. Inside, write 'Welcome to school / St Thomas' and a sentence to explain why they will have a great time there. E.g. 'We have lots of fun and play together.' Finish it with 'From ________.' Remember to use Phase 3 & 4 Phonics.

 

Year 1s (not Monsters or Aliens) - In your workbook, draw a picture of something you love at our school. Write 3+ sentences to explain to the new children why they will have a great time at St Thomas. Remember to use Phase 5 Phonics, 'and' and 'because'. E.g. 'St Thomas is a brilliant school because we have lots of fun and all play nicely together.'
