Topic 9 - TREASURES

 

Lesson 1 (Week 12) - What we Treasure:

 

1. Answer the 'Big Question' below, either by talking about it to a grown up / older sibling, drawing a picture, or writing a sentence.

 

2. Have a look at Miss Burt's Treasure Chest (below), to see the things I treasure. What do you treasure? Why?

 

3. Think about these questions:

  • How did you feel when you received the treasure?

  • What did you say to the person that gave you the gift?

  • Does a treasure have to cost money?

  • How should we treat the treasures of this earth?

 

Reception Class, Monsters & Aliens - Draw some things you treasure in the treasure chest (or in your workbook) and try to label / write some simple sentences about them. Tell an adult why you treasure each thing.

 

Year 1s (not Monsters / Aliens) - Draw 3 things you treasure in your workbook. Using Phase 5 Phonics, write 3 sentences about them ('I treasure ________ because ________.') E.g. 'I treasure my mum because she looks after me.'

Lesson 2 (Week 13) - The world is God’s treasure given to us

 

1. Watch the Creation Story video below. 

 

2. Talk about these questions:

   Q. What did God create for us when he made our world?

   Q. How did God feel about everything he had created?

   Q. Whose job do you think it is to look after God's creations?

 

3. Think of some ways that humans look after / harm God's world (e.g. 'We look after God's world when we are kind to our pets. We harm God's world when we drop litter on the floor.')

 

4. Complete this task: 

 

* Reception (not Monkeys) - Draw one way we might look after God's world, and one way humans sometimes harm it. Explain them to a grown-up - they can write them down for you.

* Y1s + Aliens, Monsters & Monkeys - As above, but complete the sentences yourself using your sound mat.

Topic 8 - RULES

 

Lesson 1 (Week 9) - How rules can help at home and at school:

 

1. Answer the 'Big Question' below, either by talking about it to a grown up / older sibling, drawing a picture, or writing a sentence.

 

2. Read the 'Rules for Sport' story (below). Talk about these questions:

   Q. What new rules did Robin learn? Why were they important?

   Q. What do you think of David? 

   Q. What would have happened if Robin had not followed the rules when he played with the others?

 

3. Complete the task below about school rules (why we have them and what would happen if we didn't).

   Reception - Draw & talk; Year 1 - Write sentences (try to use 'because').

 

* To practise following rules, play a game with your family (e.g. a board game, a sport, a computer game, snakes & ladders [below]) *

Lesson 2 (Week 10) - God's Rule for People

 

1. Recap why rules are so important.

 

2. God has rules to help us live well with ourselves and each other. Read 'Colossians 3: 10-17' (below). Talk about these questions:

   Q. What does God want us to be like?

   Q. 'You are all different' - does this matter to God? Why not?

   Q. How does it make you feel to know that you are one of God's children?

 

3. St. Paul says: ‘You are God’s people, his saints’. We can all be one of God’s saints by doing good deeds. What could you do to be one of God's Saints?

 

3. Complete the task below about being one of God's Saints (either on the sheet or in your workbook).

 

* Reception (not Monkeys) - Draw a way that you can be one of God's Saints and explain it to a grown-up. They can write it down for you.

* Monkeys, Aliens & Monsters - Draw a way that you can be one of God's Saints and write a simple 'I can.....' sentence underneath.

* Y1s (not Aliens or Monsters) - Draw 3 ways that you can be one of God's Saints and write a more detailed sentence under each one.

 

Challenge: carry out a random act of kindness for someone.

 

Lesson 3 (Week 11) - Zacchaeus

 

* Recap God's rule for his people - what does God want us to be like? 

 

* Watch the video (below) about Zacchaeus.

* Answer these questions:

  Q. How had Zacchaues been breaking God's rule for his people?

  Q. How did the people treat Zacchaeus? 

  Q. Why do you think Jesus said he would stay at Zacchaeus' house?

  Q. How did Zacchaeus show he was sorry for his past behaviour?

 

Year 1 (not Monsters or Aliens) - Complete the 3 speech bubbles, using 'I' and 'We', to show what the people in the story might say about the events that happened.  

 

Monkeys, Monsters & Aliens - Complete the 3 sentences in the letter, as Zacchaeus to Jesus:

                                      'I am sorry for...', 'Thank you for...' and 'I promise to...'.

 

Reception Class (not Monkeys) + extra activity for anyone else - Cut out the pictures and stick them onto the background to show what happened in the story. Tell an adult / older child what is happening and what the people said.

Lesson 1:

 

1. Answer the 'Big Question' below, either by talking about it to a grown up / older sibling, drawing a picture, or writing a sentence.

 

2. We are going to think about passing on messages. Talk about these question:

   Q. Why is it a bit more difficult to pass on messages at the moment?

   Q. Why is it really important that we do keep in contact with each other?

   Q. Are some messages more important than others?

   Q. Think about Chinese Whispers - what can go wrong when people pass messages on?

 

3. Have a look at the sheet of ideas below - which ways of passing on messages have you / your parents used / seen? 

 

4. Send someone a message in one of these ways - be creative!

Lesson 2 - Jesus is Risen!

 

* Recap The Easter Story.

* Watch the Youtube video (below - from 3:50).

* Read the Info PPT.

* Think about these Qs:

 

Q  How do you think the women were feeling?

Q  What was the message the men (angels) gave to the women?

Q  What had Jesus told them to remember? 

Q  How do you think the disciples felt when they heard the news from the women?

 

* Complete the speech bubble, either in your workbook or on the sheet below, to show what the women might have told the disciples about what had happened at the tomb, and what the men (angels) had said to then.

Lesson 3 - The Promise of the Holy Spirit

 

* Recap what happened when the women went to visit the tomb.

* Read The Promise of the Holy Spirit PPT document below.

 

Think about these questions:

Q  Who did Jesus return to?

Q  What did He promise to do for His friends?

Q  What was the new friend called?

Q  Can you tell some of the things that the new friend is going to do?

Q  How do you think Jesus’ friends felt when he gave them the news of the Holy Spirit?

 

* Complete the speech bubble, either in your workbook or on the worksheet below, to show what Jesus said the Holy Spirit would do.

Lesson 4 - Ascension Day

 

* Read the Ascension Day Info document below.

 

Think about these questions:

 

Q  Can you remember what was promised to the disciples?

Q  How do you think the disciples felt when Jesus blessed them?

Q  How do you think they then felt when Jesus was taken from them?

Q  Where was Jesus going?

Q What did the disciples do after Jesus had gone?

 

* Complete the correct sheet below, using the word mat to help you.

Lesson 5 - Pentecost Day

 

* RECAP - What happened on Ascension Day? What did Jesus promise to send his friends? 

 

* Watch the video below about Pentecost Day.

* Read the first slide of the Pentecost PPT below.

 

Think about these questions:

 

Q  What happened on Pentecost day?

Q  What did the friends do?

Q  How do you think they felt then, compared to after Ascension Day?

 

* Look at Slide 2 of the PPT - You are going to pretend you are this man - a reporter for the Jerusalem Herald newspaper.

* Slides 3 & 4 - What did you see? ...hear? ...smell? ...feel? What did you think?

 

Aliens & Monsters - Draw a picture of what you (the reporter) saw. Write 2 sentences about it (e.g. 'I saw flames on their heads.').

Superheroes & Pirates - Draw a picture of what you (the reporter) saw. Choose a title for your article. Write some sentences (using 'and' / 'because') about it (e.g. 'I saw flames on their heads and I was amazed.').

 

* Remember to use the Pentecost Guide Sheet and your Sound Mat.

Task: Complete the table below / draw it in your workbook to list at least one thing you would see, smell, hear, feel and taste at a Hindu home shrine. 

Topic 6 - Lent / Easter - OPPORTUNITIES

 

Lesson 1:

 

1. Answer the 'Big Question' below, either by talking about it to a grown up / older sibling, drawing a picture, or writing a sentence.

 

2. Look at the examples of fairytale characters who made a bad choice (see below). Talk about the bad choices they made. What should they have done differently?

 

3. Write one sentence in your workbook about a time when you made a good choice (e.g. 'When I tidied my room.'), and one sentence about a time when you made a bad choice (e.g. 'When I didn't listen on the carpet.').

Lesson 2:

 

1. Read through the Palm Sunday information. Talk about the questions on p.5.

2. Look at the image (Church's Story 2 pp.68-69) - can you find our why Father is wearing red instead of purple?

3. Either in your workbook or on the sheet below, complete this task:

* Superheroes & Pirates - write a short newspaper report about what happened on Palm Sunday. Imagine you were there and write about what you saw and heard, plus how the crowd were feeling. Remember to use your sound mat.

* Aliens & Monsters - complete the speech bubble to show some of the things the crowd said on Palm Sunday. Remember to use your sound mat.

1. Read the Maundy Thursday information and talk about the questions.

2. Look at the photograph (Church's Story 2 pp. 70-71) and answer this question in your workbook:
